Ha Sang Rim (b. 1961) has explored the sensibilities of nature and life through line and color since the mid-1980s. She began her practice in Germany with abstract paintings characterized by vivid colors and freely moving lines, and during the 1990s worked across painting and installation while engaging with social and environmental concerns. From the late 1990s, she began focusing on plant forms such as dried physalis, seeds, flowers, and grasses, and the line that had persisted since her early abstract paintings gradually became the central visual language of her practice.
During the 2000s, Ha developed her interest in cycles of growth and decay and the temporality of life through simplified contours and residual images of flowers. In the 2010s, her practice shifted toward a more direct observation of nature. Working from photographs of grasses and plants she took herself, she isolated the lines of stems and leaf veins and transferred them onto canvas using tape, reducing recognizable forms to structures composed of line and color. For Ha, flowers and grasses are not simply subjects to be represented, but points of departure for examining the processes through which life takes form, grows, and eventually disappears.
In her recent work, Ha has moved away from closely following actual plants or photographic sources, developing instead a freer language of line drawn from forms and movements accumulated through years of observing nature. From tracing lines discovered in the natural world to internalizing their structures as her own painterly language, her practice has continuously evolved between figuration and abstraction, observation and memory. Throughout these shifts, line, color, and the sense of life they carry have remained consistent threads connecting several decades of her work.
Ha studied Western painting at Hongik University and painting at the Cologne University of Fine Arts in Germany. She has since held numerous solo exhibitions at venues including Gallery IHN, Gana Art, and Gallery2. In 2019, her exhibition UNTITLED 1992–2017 at Gallery2 Jeju brought together twenty-five years of her practice and traced its development over time. Her works are held in institutional and private collections including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; Seoul Museum of Art; Hansol Cultural Foundation; and the United Nations Office at Geneva. In 2006, her floral imagery was incorporated into LG Electronics’ “Art DIOS” home appliance designs, bringing her work to a broader public beyond the conventional sphere of fine art. Over several decades, Ha has continued to transform forms and lines discovered in nature, developing them into a distinctive painterly language of her own.
