Sejin Kwon(b.1988) has developed a painting practice that translates photographic images into the material language of ink and paper. Having studied calligraphy from an early age and later trained in Korean painting, Kwon has approached tradition not through established brushwork or conventions of landscape painting, but by asking how images encountered in everyday life might be re-seen through painting. His early works drew on old family photographs and images of a now-closed elementary school, exploring vanished places and childhood memories. He later expanded his subjects to include urban nightscapes, water surfaces, mountains, and waterfalls photographed by the artist himself. For Kwon, photography is less a finished image than a point of departure—one that acquires a different sense of time and material presence as it passes through ink and Korean paper.

Since 2017, his ongoing series of “fragment paintings” has become central to this practice. Kwon divides a single photographic image into small square units, paints each individually in ink, and then reassembles them into a larger image. What began as a practical response to the limitations of a small studio and the drying time of ink gradually developed into a pictorial system that transforms the instantaneous vision of photography into accumulated intervals of manual labor. Through this method, he has moved from night streets and water surfaces to the CMYK color system, multi-perspectival landscapes, and images of objects collected online. In his recent exhibition Defragmentation (2026), Kwon translated found images of flames and smoke into large-scale ink paintings, slowing down images that would otherwise be rapidly circulated and consumed online. His work thus extends beyond the reinterpretation of traditional ink painting to consider what new role ink and paper might assume in an image culture shaped by photography, digital media, and online circulation.

Born in 1988, Sejin Kwon received his BFA and MFA in Korean Painting from Kyungpook National University and his PhD in Oriental Painting from Hongik University in 2025. Since his first solo exhibition, Blurred Landscape, at Bongsan Cultural Center in 2014, he has presented solo exhibitions at Gallery2, Artside Gallery, Suseong Artpia, and Eoul Art Center, among others. His work has been included in exhibitions at Daegu Art Museum, Pohang Museum of Steel Art, Seoul National University Museum of Art, and the Jeonnam International SUMUK Biennale. His works are held in the collections of the Seoul Museum of Art, Daegu Art Museum, Jeonnam Museum of Art, Pohang Museum of Steel Art, Wooran Foundation, and the MMCA Art Bank, among others.
