이소정(b.1979)은

Born in 1979, Sojung Lee has consistently explored the relationship between artistic intention and the changes that arise through the behavior of materials in the process of image-making. Working primarily with hanji and ink, she builds her paintings by observing the bleeding, absorption, layering, and traces that emerge during the process rather than determining a finished image in advance. Over time, this interest has expanded beyond the completion of a single image toward a practice in which forms and traces generated through one work continue into another.
In her early works, Lee sought to actively control the pictorial field through finely rendered organic forms suggestive of the body, repeating and proliferating them across the surface. She later introduced signs, manuals, and predetermined rules into her process, cutting, transferring, and reconnecting existing images in an effort to systematize the way images were constructed. Through these experiments, however, she became increasingly attentive to the fact that unexpected changes and the artist’s own judgment inevitably intervene even within the most carefully devised systems. Rather than suppressing such elements, Lee gradually began to accept them as part of the work itself. Since her 2019 exhibition *Detectives*, she has used the accidental traces produced by the bleeding of ink and the physical interactions between paper and pigment as points of departure for new images. More recently, she has extended this approach by peeling away layers of jangji and transferring fragments of paper and images left from previous works into new compositions. In her 2025 solo exhibition *Genealogy of Traces*, traces originating in one work became part of the next and continued into subsequent works, further developing her longstanding interest in how images are generated and transformed.
Sojung Lee received her BFA in Korean Painting from Ewha Womans University and her MFA in Oriental Painting from Seoul National University. Since her 2007 Kumho Young Artist solo exhibition *Coward in the Snowfield* at Kumho Museum of Art, she has presented solo exhibitions at Brain Factory, DOOSAN Gallery New York and Seoul, P21, and Gallery2, among others. She participated in the MMCA Changdong Residency and DOOSAN Residency New York and received the 2nd DOOSAN Yonkang Arts Award in 2011. Her work has been included in exhibitions at major institutions including the Seoul Museum of Art, Jeju Museum of Art, ARARIO MUSEUM, Amorepacific Museum of Art, and Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as *Muted Rhythm* at Lehmann Maupin Seoul in 2026. Her works are held in the collections of Kumho Museum of Art, Suwon Museum of Art, Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art, DOOSAN Gallery, and the Government Art Bank of Korea.
