Jaemin Jang

Black Stones and Waves, oil on canvas, 73x91cm, 2025

Jaemin Jang has developed a painting practice rooted in places he has encountered firsthand and the sensory experiences they leave behind. He walks through and spends time in locations slightly removed from everyday urban life—reservoirs and seas, forests and hillsides, unfamiliar roads and empty lots—bringing into his paintings not only what he sees, but also temperature, humidity, smell, sound, and the passage of time. For Jang, landscape is less a scene to be faithfully reproduced than something that continually changes through bodily experience and memory. What he has actually seen, what remains in memory, the sensations of a particular moment, and subsequent imagination overlap within the same pictorial field, transforming specific places into scenes that no longer exist in reality.

Jang’s earlier works focused on places fading within memory and on the experience of looking at unfamiliar landscapes. His practice gradually expanded toward sensations that are difficult to capture through vision alone, such as the dampness and smell of waterside environments, the darkness of night, and distant sounds. He translated these experiences into thick layers of paint, rapid brushwork, disrupted perspective, and dissolving forms. More recently, his attention has shifted toward the very structure of pictorial space and the position from which a landscape is perceived. By rotating or inverting the canvas as he works and combining views observed from different positions and moments in time, Jang unsettles familiar spatial coordinates such as above and below, near and far. Landscape thus becomes not a fixed image, but a pictorial space in which multiple times, viewpoints, and sensations coexist.

Born in 1984, Jaemin Jang received his BFA and MFA in Painting from Hongik University in Seoul. Since his first solo exhibition, Landscape That Lost Time, at Project Space Sarubia in 2014, he has presented solo exhibitions at POSCO Art Museum, Kumho Museum of Art, Hakgojae, BOAN1942, and Gallery2, among others. He was selected for the 36th JoongAng Fine Arts Prize and the 4th Chongkundang Yesuljisang, and has participated in residencies including Domaine de Kerguéhennec in France and ArtisTree SanYang in Jeju. These experiences of travel and prolonged immersion in different environments have remained central to his practice. Moving beyond the representation of landscape, Jang continues to explore painting as a means of examining how a place is seen, sensed, remembered, and reconstructed.
