Double Skin: 김수연 Suyeon Kim
Suyeon Kim’s practice originates in the velocity of fleeting things, a transience beyond grasp. While her earlier Wind and Weather series explored the immaterial atmospheres of nature through painterly forms, this exhibition, Double Skin, turns that same analytical gaze inward toward the terrain of intimate human emotion. Love, within this context, emerges as a highly mercurial state: unpredictably fluid at times, yet occasionally settling into a persistent, dull ache. By reworking these invisible emotional shifts into physical form in painting and an expansive paper-drawing installation across the exhibition space, Kim elevates deeply private experiences into a universal narrative that we all endure.
The Loving Condition series traces a relationship’s trajectory from its initial encounter to its eventual dissolution. By borrowing the numerology, cultural symbolism, and iconography of the tarot, these compositions visualize relationship not as a resolved ever-after, but as a state with no arrival at all, perpetually caught in transformation. Opening the sequence, The Lovers reorganizes the narrative of romance through a female gaze, marshaling the artist's brush and an arrangement of planetary orbits. As the connection deepens, The Choice captures the inevitable separations and decisions, along with the resolve that frames them. The Journey pictures a shared life threaded with chance and choice, before falling into The Impasse: a listless, roving directionlessness.
The Fear sinks into anxiety’s abyssal depths, and The Inversion draws a turn in perception. The Dance summons the courage of self-expression, and The Star opens onto the possibility of an independent self. The Heart traces the relationship's gradual expansion, and The Wish closes the sequence, holding grief and celebration in the same frame. Together, this sequence of cards trace a myriad of feelings suspended between finding and letting go, depending on another while maintaining independence.
While these tarot symbols adopt the formal structure of cards, the Dancer series transforms the entire exhibition space into a wide-open stage. The recurring figures animating this space, which also appear repeatedly as motifs throughout the Loving Condition series, are drawn meticulously on paper in black crayon, colored pencil, and oil pastel. These figures are paper cutout dolls, a medium drawn from Kim’s childhood play. Clad only in undergarments and ready to dress up for any role, they embody a flexible, dynamic potential. In the past, such paper cutouts were intended as visual props to instruct children or carry talismanic, incantatory wishes, but Kim summons them as theatrical vessels, drawing up love and longing from the private depths of memory.
This context of the past is worth noting: the artist discovered cutouts from the 1950s and 60s while gathering materials for this exhibition and experienced a vague nostalgia for an era she never lived through. The cutouts evoked a memory of a vibrant (so-called) Golden Age that her parents lived through, a time when there was a constant emergence of the new. Within this fictive, enchanted time, the paper dolls extend their bodies freely into open (ouvert) postures as if in a ballet sequence, walk the stage as performers, and pass dancing gestures from one figure to the next, acquiring a lifelike vitality in which their individual breaths almost feel tangible.
Set against this expansive paper stage, the painting Passage (2026) is without the very figures that animate the surrounding space. Its surface retains only the creases of paper, faint gradations of light and shadowed textures. On this canvas ground, where data, material reaction, and uncontrollable natural dynamics intersect, the substance of the figure has simply evaporated. That emptiness becomes an expansive site: it projects the traces of memory the figures left behind, even as those figures have exited the canvas to perform their gestures on the gallery walls.
This expansion of the stage, in turn, touches on how Suyeon Kim engages with painting itself. For her, painting is more than a means of faithful representation. It is the work of holding onto what has gone and remembering it. Intriguingly, the blue-toned grounds of the canvas paintings in this exhibition intersect with her earlier series, The Records of the Sky's Color, Temperature, and Humidity on That Day (2023–2024). That work arose from tracking the varied meteorological conditions of the four seasons from November 2023 to December 2024. From her daily observations of the sky's colors, she worked with a mixed solution of acrylic paint and medium onto canvas and let it dry naturally.
In this exhibition, the records of the sky are called forth as the vast atmosphere and terrain across which her narrative of feeling unfolds. They become a visual layer: proof that the fluid meeting and dissolution traced in Loving Condition, and the boundless possibilities implied by the Dancer series and Passage, unfold against an actual, physical ground. Together, the chance materiality of her past series, the conceptual framework of the tarot, and the context of the paper doll cutouts interlock, constructing a hybrid ecosystem that gives shape to the chronicle of relationships and to the ebb and flow of change.
The exhibition's title, Double Skin, names the complex structure that emerges from these overlapping layers: inside and outside the canvas, absence and presence, love and its changing emotions, transience and permanence. Kim's paintings seize hold of coiling time on the plane's taut surface. Like a fragile omen glimpsed by chance in the hush of a midsummer night, her work projects the wish that this string of feelings might endure. Ultimately, it is a task life casts before us, and the nature of love already placed in everyone’s hand.
