Kim Taeyeon (b. 1987) is a sculptor whose practice examines the standards and conditions that determine objects and forms, and the deviations and variations that emerge within them. In his early works, he explored how externally imposed conditions—such as transport regulations, architectural constraints, and measuring tools—limit and shape the movement of objects and bodies. Over time, however, he came to understand the frame not simply as something to be escaped, but as a condition through which form comes into being, shifting his attention toward the reciprocal relationship between frame and form.
Kim draws on standardized objects such as rulers, grids, and springs, as well as supporting structures found in everyday life and sites of production, including pedestals, armatures, packing materials, and partition stands. By altering their scale, material, position, and function, he unsettles familiar distinctions between artwork and support, foreground and background. More recently, this inquiry has extended to the relationship between the body and material. Rather than exercising complete control over form, Kim allows bodily movement, material resistance, time, and environmental conditions to participate in determining the outcome. His sculpture has thus increasingly become less about producing a singular form than about revealing the conditions and relationships through which form is made.
Kim received his BFA in Environmental Sculpture from the University of Seoul and his MFA from the Mount Royal School of Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art. He has held solo exhibitions including Form and Variation (2021) and Nameless Background (2024) at Gallery2, and has participated in residency programs at Seoul Art Space Geumcheon, ZK/U Berlin, Taipei Artist Village, and the MMCA Goyang Residency, among others. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan and the Seoul Metropolitan Government. His recent practice continues to explore shifting modes of relation and determination between artist and material, form and condition, without fixing agency on either side.
