Woonghyun Kim (b. 1984) explores how real-world events are perceived and experienced differently as they pass through systems such as media, data, and games. Drawing on the generational experience of growing up with the internet and gaming as part of everyday life, he has consistently examined the ways in which news, images, data, and simulations mediate reality. In his work, the boundary between the real and the virtual is less something to be distinguished than a condition in which the two are already intertwined. Through video, installation, sculpture, and performance, Kim investigates what individuals come to accept as reality and how they respond within this environment.

His earlier works combined online games, historical events in Korean society, and generational memory to reconstruct reality through alternative narratives. In the Legacy of the Void series, he connected events such as the Asian financial crisis and Chung Ju-yung’s cattle drive to North Korea with the gaming and internet culture of the same period, including StarCraft and Diablo. His practice later expanded toward questions of data and remote bodies, life and statistics, disaster and simulation. Works such as Night Meeting, Ribosome, Crumpled Man, and CIRKUS examine how technology and information are used to predict and explain risk, as well as how repeated exposure to images alters our capacity to perceive crisis. Alongside his studio practice, Kim also ran PERFORM, a platform for immaterial art, extending these concerns to the ways performance and media-based works are viewed, circulated, and collected.

More recently, Kim has moved beyond juxtaposing reality and fiction to focus increasingly on the conditions and structures through which audiences experience a work. In his practice, the viewer is not simply a passive observer of a finished image, but a participant who makes choices, moves within a set of rules, and activates the work. By treating the devices and spaces through which moving images are presented, as well as the ways works are transmitted and owned, as part of the experience itself, Kim continues to investigate the interfaces and systems through which reality is perceived. His practice thus extends beyond representing contemporary image and technological culture to question the very ways in which we see, believe in, and consume reality.

Kim received his BFA and MFA in Painting from Kookmin University and completed the doctoral coursework in Painting at Hongik University. His work has been presented at major institutions including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), Seoul Museum of Art, Gwangju Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Sharjah Art Foundation, and ArkDes in Stockholm, and he participated in the Gwangju Pavilion of the 15th Gwangju Biennale. He has been an artist-in-residence at MMCA Changdong Residency and SeMA Nanji Residency, and has also worked as a co-curator at SeMA Buk-Seoul Museum of Art. From 2016 to 2021, Kim founded and directed PERFORM, a platform for immaterial art that explored new modes of artistic production, circulation, collection, and audience experience. His work is held in the collection of MMCA.
