Hyunsun Jeon has developed a painting practice centered on how images are formed, perceived, and transformed through their relationships with one another. Her visual vocabulary draws from a wide range of sources accumulated since childhood: low-resolution digital images, early graphic interfaces, the flat visual language of 2D animation, fairy tales, and personal memories. From this archive, Jeon brings together familiar objects such as figs, trees, and houses with geometric forms including cones, cylinders, and circles. Rather than carrying fixed meanings, these forms continually shift according to the images that surround them, opening multiple possibilities for interpretation. Working primarily with watercolor on canvas, Jeon builds her paintings inductively, responding to each small image, color, and brushstroke as the composition develops.
While Jeon’s earlier works explored the gaps between narrative and image, language and painting, her practice has gradually moved toward bringing multiple viewpoints, temporalities, and states between figuration and abstraction into the same pictorial field. More recently, these concerns have expanded beyond the limits of the individual canvas and into physical space. She connects paintings into wall-like or architectural structures, translates painted forms into sculptural objects, and incorporates moving images, inviting viewers to move through and around the work. Jeon approaches painting not as a vehicle for a complete or singular message, but as a field in which multiple possibilities remain open. The viewer is therefore asked not to grasp the work at once, but to navigate among its images and construct an individual sequence and route. In this way, Jeon continues to extend painting from a fixed image into a spatial and perceptual experience in which meaning remains in motion.
Born in 1989, Hyunsun Jeon received her BFA and MFA in Painting from Ewha Womans University in Seoul.
