이은새(b. 1987)는 자신이 마주한 사람과 사건, 사물을 회화로 옮기는 과정에서 발생하는 시선과 이미지의 문제를 탐구해온 작가다. 초기에는 일상의 사건을 목격하고 기록하는 행위에서 출발해, 미디어 속 여성의 이미지와 가족의 형태처럼 사회적으로 익숙하게 규정되어온 대상을 다루었다. 이 과정에서 누가 누구를 바라보는지, 현실의 대상을 이미지로 가져오는 행위가 어떤 관계를 만들어내는지를 질문하며, 대상이 하나의 의미로 고정되는 순간을 흔들어왔다.
이후 이은새의 관심은 무엇을 그리는가에서 그것을 어떻게 회화로 만드는가의 문제로 확장되었다. 반복적인 드로잉과 변형, 지우기와 덧그리기를 통해 이미지가 화면 위에서 다시 만들어지는 과정을 드러내고, PET 필름과 철판, 조각과 벽화 등으로 작업의 물질적 범위를 넓혀왔다. 최근에는 물, 그릇, 음식, 얼룩, 멍과 같은 사물과 흔적에 주목하며, 대상을 바라보는 시선뿐 아니라 그것과 접촉하고 감각하는 방식까지 탐구하고 있다. 인물에서 사물과 표면으로 소재는 변화해왔지만, 익숙한 이미지를 낯선 상태로 되돌려 놓는 태도는 작업 전반을 관통한다.
이은새는 홍익대학교 회화과와 한국예술종합학교 조형예술과를 졸업했으며, 서울시립미술관 난지미술창작스튜디오, 국립현대미술관 고양레지던시, 인천아트플랫폼을 거쳐 2023년부터 2025년까지 암스테르담 Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten에 참여했다. 갤러리2를 비롯해 대안공간 루프, 일민미술관, L21, PHD Group, Galerie Fons Welters 등 국내외에서 개인전을 열었으며, 국립현대미술관 《젊은모색 2019》, 리움미술관 《Art Spectrum 2024》, 서울시립미술관 등의 주요 전시에 참여했다. 작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행과 서울시립미술관 등에 소장되어 있다.
Eunsae Lee (b. 1987) explores the dynamics of looking and image-making that arise in the process of translating the people, events, and objects she encounters into painting. Her early practice began with acts of witnessing and recording everyday incidents, and developed through subjects shaped by familiar social conventions, including representations of women in the media and different forms of family. Through these works, Lee has continually questioned who is looking at whom, what kind of relationship is produced when a subject from reality is turned into an image, and how painting might unsettle the moment in which a subject becomes fixed within a single meaning.
Lee’s practice has since expanded from the question of what to paint toward the process of how an image becomes a painting. Through repeated drawing, alteration, erasure, and overpainting, she foregrounds the ways images are reconstructed on the surface, while extending the material scope of her work to PET film, steel plate, sculpture, and murals. More recently, she has turned her attention to objects and traces such as water, vessels, food, stains, and bruises, exploring not only how we look at things but also how we come into contact with and perceive them. While her subjects have shifted from figures to objects and surfaces, her sustained effort to return familiar images to an unfamiliar and unsettled state remains central to her practice.
Lee studied Painting at Hongik University and Fine Arts at Korea National University of Arts. She has participated in residency programs at SeMA Nanji Residency, MMCA Goyang Residency, and Incheon Art Platform, and was a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam from 2023 to 2025. She has held solo exhibitions at Gallery2, Alternative Space LOOP, Ilmin Museum of Art, L21, PHD Group, and Galerie Fons Welters, among others, and has participated in major institutional exhibitions including Young Korean Artists 2019 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Art Spectrum 2024 at Leeum Museum of Art, and exhibitions at the Seoul Museum of Art. Her works are held in collections including the MMCA Art Bank and the Seoul Museum of Art.
