Since the mid-2000s, Donghyun Son has developed a practice that brings the traditional forms and materials of East Asian painting into renewed contact with contemporary images and visual experience. Trained in Oriental Painting at Seoul National University, Son began by connecting the conventions of ink and color painting, portraiture, *munjado* (pictorial ideographs), and landscape painting with the popular culture of his own generation. Characters from films and animation, corporate logos, and figures such as Michael Jackson were translated into the formats of traditional portraiture and pictorial writing, bringing images from different cultural and historical contexts together within a single pictorial language. For Son, tradition is not a fixed form to be preserved or reproduced, but a living artistic resource capable of generating new images and meanings through its encounter with the visual culture of the present.

From the mid-2010s onward, Son’s focus gradually shifted from what contemporary image might be rendered through traditional painting to the very processes by which painting produces form. He personified pine trees, transformed classical theories and techniques of East Asian painting into characters and images, and turned increasingly toward the internal structures of painting itself: ink and paper, line and brushwork, writing and image. More recently, these concerns have expanded into questions of landscape and space. Son revisits historical landscape paintings from a contemporary perspective, rearranging their elements to construct new pictorial environments; he folds and cuts paper, disassembles and recombines written characters and motifs, and extends elements of painting into objects, display structures, windows, and gallery walls. Through these processes, tradition becomes less a stable style than a structure that can be continuously reconfigured and put to new use. Son’s practice approaches East Asian painting not as a genre confined to the past, but as an evolving pictorial language capable of absorbing the images, objects, and spaces of the present.
