김수연(b.1986)의 작업은 오랫동안 사진이나 책에서 발견한 이미지를 현실의 물체로 만들고, 그것을 다시 회화로 옮기는 과정에서 출발해왔다. 죽은 새와 식물, 오래된 백과사전 속 행성과 비행기구, 춘화 등 서로 다른 소재를 다루면서도, 이미 사라졌거나 직접 볼 수 없는 것, 혹은 실제와 상상 사이에 놓인 대상을 다시 보고자 하는 관심은 지속되어 왔다. 김수연은 수집한 이미지를 종이로 자르고 구겨 입체물로 만든 뒤 조명 아래 배치하거나 사진으로 촬영해 그림으로 옮겼으며, 이러한 ‘만드는 과정’ 자체를 자신의 드로잉이라고 설명해왔다. 회화는 그에게 이미지를 그대로 재현하는 결과물이기보다 사진, 오브제, 손의 노동과 시간이 여러 차례 겹쳐지는 장소에 가깝다.
2020년대부터 김수연의 작업은 날씨와 자연의 변화로 확장되었다. 비와 눈, 구름을 관찰하는 한편 붓과 펜을 바람에 맡겨 그 움직임을 기록했고, 이후에는 하늘의 색과 온도, 습도, 재료의 건조 과정에서 생기는 균열과 번짐까지 회화의 일부로 받아들이기 시작했다. 작가가 모든 형태를 결정하기보다 주변 환경과 재료가 만들어내는 우연한 결과를 작업 안에 남기는 방식이다.
최근에는 이렇게 만들어진 화면 위에 종이인형, 카드, 게임판, 전개도 등 오래전부터 수집하거나 관심을 가져온 이미지들을 다시 불러들이고 있다. 일부 형상은 캔버스 밖으로 나와 실제 공간에 설치되고 벽에 그림자를 만들기도 한다. 초기부터 이어져온 이미지와 오브제, 평면과 입체 사이의 이동은 최근 작업에서 회화와 공간의 관계로 한층 넓어지고 있다. 김수연은 회화를 중심에 두면서도 자연이 만든 흔적, 개인적으로 선택한 이미지, 손으로 만든 물체와 실제 공간을 함께 다루며 자신의 회화가 받아들일 수 있는 범위를 계속 확장하고 있다.
김수연은 회화를 기반으로 사진, 입체, 설치를 넘나들며 이미지가 만들어지고 변화하는 과정을 탐구해온 작가다. 국민대학교 회화과와 동 대학원에서 회화를 전공했으며, 갤러리2, P21, 갤러리현대 윈도우갤러리, 베를린 Aando Fine Art, 도쿄 SH Art Project 등에서 개인전을 열었다. 부산시립미술관, 울산시립미술관, 국립아시아문화전당, 일민미술관, OCI미술관 등의 전시에 참여했으며, 국립현대미술관 고양레지던시 국제교환프로그램, OCI미술관 창작스튜디오, 화이트블럭 천안창작촌 등 여러 레지던시를 거치며 작업을 이어왔다.
Suyeon Kim(b.1986)’s practice has long developed through a process of taking images found in photographs and books, giving them physical form, and translating them back into painting. Her subjects have ranged from dead birds and plants to planets and flying machines found in old encyclopedias, as well as Japanese erotic prints. Across these different bodies of work, she has remained interested in things that have disappeared, cannot be directly seen, or sit somewhere between fact and imagination. Kim often cut, folded, and assembled collected images into paper objects, staged or photographed them, and then used them as subjects for paintings. She has described this act of making as a form of drawing, treating painting as a place where images, objects, handwork, and time pass through one another.
Since the early 2020s, her work has expanded toward weather and changes in the natural environment. Kim has observed rain, snow, and clouds, suspended brushes and pens in the wind to record its movement, and incorporated the effects of sky color, temperature, humidity, and drying processes into the surfaces of her paintings. Rather than determining every part of an image herself, she increasingly allows materials and surrounding conditions to leave their own marks on the work.
Her recent works bring these surfaces together with paper dolls, cards, game boards, diagrams, and other images she has collected or been drawn to over time. Some figures extend beyond the canvas into physical space, where they cast real shadows on the wall. The movement between image and object, and between flatness and three-dimensional form, that has shaped Kim’s practice from the beginning is now expanding into a broader relationship between painting and space. With painting remaining at the center of her work, Kim continues to bring together environmental traces, personally selected images, handmade objects, and physical space, extending the range of what a painting can contain and become.
Suyeon Kim is a Seoul-based artist whose practice is rooted in painting while moving across photography, object-making, and installation. She studied painting at Kookmin University and received her MFA from the same institution. Her solo exhibitions have been presented at Gallery2, P21, Gallery Hyundai Window Gallery, Aando Fine Art in Berlin, and SH Art Project in Tokyo. She has participated in exhibitions at institutions including the Busan Museum of Art, Ulsan Art Museum, Asia Culture Center, Ilmin Museum of Art, and OCI Museum of Art, and has taken part in residency programs including the MMCA Goyang Residency International Exchange Program, OCI Museum of Art Studio, and White Block Art Center residency.
