Made from black cold cast bronze, In the very beginning, before words, there were… consists of a collection of elements that resemble rocks, logs and sticks. Similar to the materials needed for an outdoor fire, the bronze elements can be placed to construct such a campfire site. Each time the work is exhibited the constellation can be determined by owner, curator or installer from the stock pile of materials. The elements not used can be installed alongside. At the same time, the black color of the objects, suggests a fire may have already scorched them, adding the evocation of ruins or the remnants of past inhabitants.
As its title already suggests, In the very beginning, before words, there were… refers to the fundamental need for warmth and cooking of food, in a by-now archaic format. In addition, recent works were influenced by Gander's experience in the last several years of life in the countryside: In the artist’s words, “we live in the middle of nowhere really, in the countryside close to the coast. During the last year there was a drought of inspiration. There is nothing out here at night but the moon and the fire, and although it was hard to navigate working with these two such cliché and overly sensationalized signifiers, there was something in the excess of time and the endless silence that drew me to them. Something weirdly primal and existential. I couldn’t get prehistory out of my head. Images of how the world would have looked without language, that arrived with the invention of fire, consumed me. When I stared at the moon each night I was overcome by the idea that ancient civilizations based on notions of balance and stasis would be the only way forward for us.”
