김수연(b. 1986)은 조류도감, 식물도감, 백과사전, 춘화 등 관심이 가는 주제를 그림으로 그려낸다. 작업은 그림으로 그릴 대상의 이미지를 수집하고 출력한 이미지를 입체물로 만드는 과정에서부터 시작한다. 그림을 그리기 위해 제작된 조형물은 드로잉이면서 하나의 작품이 된다. 매번 주제에 맞게 작품의 제작방식을 바꾸는 김수연은 최근 춘화를 주제로 작업을 진행하고 있다. ‘내가 만약 춘화 화가라면 어떤 그림을 그릴 것인가?’라는 설정에서 시작한 이번 작업은 고전적인 아름다움을 담고 있는 조각 작품과 꽃꽂이용 장식 꽃을 이용해 영원할 수 없는 인간의 사랑과 순간이지만 쾌락 속에 존재하는 상대에 대한 애틋한 마음을 표현했다. 수집한 이미지가 갖는 각기 다른 시점과 빛의 방향 그리고 원본 이미지에서 사물만을 남겨 놓고 주변을 잘라낸 흔적을 그대로 남겨두는 것은 각각의 사물이 다 다른 시공간에서 존재했음을 암시한다. 

Suyeon Kim(b.1986) started working in illustrated bird and plant guide books, encyclopedias, and obscene picture books. She collects the images and makes prints to build three-dimensional objects. These three-dimensional objects are both drawings and objects at the same time. The building method is not fixed as she changes it depending on the images. The recent work is based on a Chunhwa(春畵, literally "spring pictures"). She started with the question: what would I paint if I were a Chunhwa painter? By using sculptures reminding us of classical beauty and flower arrangements, the artist attempts to portray a great fondness existing between lovers who also seek momentary pleasure. The final image contains different perspectives, directions of light, and traces left from the original images, implying that every object in the final image once existed in a different time and space.
